| HISTORY : | Clara Barton was born December 25, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. During the Civil War she volunteered, aiding the sick and the wounded and providing aid at the front. After the war she lobbied for rights of the sick and wounded during war and for the Red Cross to have an affiliation in the United States, winning for both causes with the signing of the Treaty of Geneva by the United States in 1882 and the founding of the American Red Cross in 1881. |
