HISTORY : Thomas Royce Brendle was born on September 15, 1889 in Schaefferstown, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. He attended local public schools in his childhood years and entered Albright College in 1908. The following year he transferred to Franklin and Marshall College where he completed his undergraduated work and later graduated from the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) in 1911. Soon after graduation, Brendle began ministry work at a church mission in Abilene, Kansas. He returned to Pennsylvania in 1913 as a pastor of the Old Goshenhoppen Reformed Church in Montgomery County. He remained in Montgomery County until 1926 when he was reassigned as pastor of the Egypt Reformed Church of Lehigh County. During most of his adult life Brendle researched and collected Pennsylvania-German folklore, which he kept in numerous notebooks and scrapbooks. Thomas Royce Bendle died on September 1, 1966 in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
CONTENTS: The scrapbooks of Thomas Royce Bendle contain photocopied newspaper clippings, correspondence and ephemera relating to Pennsylvania-German folklore, poetry, and literature from 1880 to 1938. Includes photocopies of newspaper clippings, correspondence and ephemera relating to the Groundhog Slumbering Lodge of Quarryville, Lancaster County and other groundhog lodges in eastern Pennsylvania from 1931 to 1950.
