| HISTORY : | James B. Bailey was the General Manager of Central (Lucknow) Iron and Steel Company of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and the President of Pine Iron Works of Pine Forge, Berks County Pennsylvania from 1902 to 1912. He was born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania on July 5th, 1869 the third son of Charles Lukens Bailey, a prominent iron nail manufacturer and Harrisburg banker. As a youth Bailey attended private academies including Hill School, graduating from there in 1886. Later the same year he attended Yale College and graduated in 1889. After leaving Yale, he began to work for his father in the iron business. In 1899 he became President of his father's company. Before the age of fourty, Bailey was the general manager of a steel company, a president of an iron company and a director of a manufacturing firm. In his later years he became an investor working in Philadelphia. |
| CONTENTS: | Consists of the copy letter book of James B. Bailey of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania from July 11, 1901 to November 11, 1911. Contains personal correspondence on the financial and manufacturing aspects of the iron industry in eastern Pennsylvania during the first decade of the 20th century. Includes information on local strikes, mergers and stock performances. The bulk of the letters were written in 1901 and 1902. |
