| HISTORY : | The Octoraro Canal Office is believed to have been located at Rowlands, Maryland at the mouth of Octoraro Creek. The Octoraro Canal began just south of the Pennsylvania-Maryland border along the east bank of the Susquehanna River and crossed the Octoraro Creek terminating north of Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland. The canal was constructed in the early 1790's and remained in operation until the late 1870's. In the 1830's it had became part of the Tidewater Canal Company and later the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal Company. |
| CONTENTS: | Contains the daily business expenses of the Octorara Canal Company, as kept by J. Emmons manager of the canal, from July 1st, 1817 to January of 1824. The ledger was later used as a scrapbook causing some pages to have newspaper clippings attached adhesively. Includes a listing of debits and credits along with names of individuals conducting business with the canal company. |
