HISTORY : William A. Cowan was a farmer and general merchant from Lower Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania during most of the 19th century. Cowan was born in Lancaster County (presently York County) on January 24, 1790. He served in the War of 1812 and saw action in the defense of Baltimore in 1814. Following the war he began farming on a plot of land near Centreville, Pennsylvania. In 1828 he was appointed the first postmaster of Lower Chanceford, a position he held for several years. By the 1850's, Cowan is believed to have opened a general store in McSherryville (now Airville). He died in Lower Chanceford Township in 1886.
CONTENTS: Ledger consists of business records kept by William A. Cowan of Lower Chanceford Township from 1856 to 1858. Records include daily entries of dry goods purchased, the price of the purchased items and the name of the purchaser.
