| HISTORY : | George T. Bassett served as a volunteer officer in the United States Subsistence Department for the Sub-District of Appomattox, Virginia and as Chief Commissioner of Subsistence for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands in Charleston, South Carolina. Bassett received a commission as a captain on March 11, 1865 in the Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers in Washington. He was assigned the following month to manage the commissary stores in Petersburg and Amelia, Virginia from July to November of 1865. In December of 1865 he was transferred to Charleston where he served as Chief Commissioner until June of 1866. His general assignment was to distribute government rations to Federal troops and destitute citizens effected by the American Civil War. |
