| HISTORY : | Abraham Carpenter practiced medicine in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania during the later part of the 18th century and first quarter of the 19th Century. He acquired a considerable reputation for being the only surgeon of his day to successfully perform an operation to remove stones in the bladder. He served as a State Representative from 1790 to 1794 and again from 1795 to 1797. In 1798 he was elected State Senator serving only a single term. In 1800 Carpenter built the Spring Valley Sawmill in Paradise Township. By 1814 he was appointed as one of the Commissioners of the Lancaster Trading Company, which later became the Lancaster Bank. He died in 1836 and is buried at Carpenter's Cemetery in Paradise Township. |
