HISTORY : Alfred Franklin Berlin was born on January 12, 1848 in Cherryville, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He was educated in public schools and later attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He became occupied with archaeological research in college, which began a lifelong hobby of collecting Native American artifacts. He graduated college in 1876 and the following year began to work with the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania. During the early 1880's Berlin worked privately as a geological surveyor for coal companies in Pennsylvania. In 1883 he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Mining Geology at Lafayette College. Two years later he ventured into the slate business and eventually became President of the Washington Slate Company. By the early 1890's his slate business was selling blackboards through out the Unites States. He was also the Director of the Second National Bank at Allentown and was one of the organizers of the Lehigh Coal and Hardware Company. He died in Allentown in 1925.
