HISTORY : Nathon Dundore was born in Bern Township (presently Penn Township), Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1834. He was brought up on the family farm until 1850 when he enrolled in a private school in Reading. After two years of formal instruction Dundore began to teach in Bern Township. In 1856, he relocated to Monmouth, Iowa where he opened a general merchandise business and was appointed postmaster. The business failed in 1859 and he ventured to Quindaro, Kansas where he returned to teaching at a local school. During the Civil War, Dundore accepted a position as a government sponsored trader to the Delaware Indians. In 1865 he was removed from office and opened a wholesale grocery store in Leavenworth. Dundore remained in Leavenworth for two years before returning to Bern Township to assist his mother who was in ill health. After his mother passed away in 1872, he moved to Philadelphia where he became a successful stockbroker.
CONTENTS: Contains the biography of Nathan Dundore of Bern Township and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Includes family histories of the Dundore and DeWees families of Pennsylvania and a transcribed license to trade with the Delaware Indians issued to "N. Dundore" in 1864.
