HISTORY : Marriott Brosius was born in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on March 7, 1843. He attended the common schools and Thomas Baker’s Academy in Colerain Township. When the Civil War began he enlisted as a private in Company K, Ninety-seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers in October of 1861. He was severely wounded at Green Plain, Virginia and was honorably discharged in December of 1864. He was later commissioned a second lieutenant for bravery on the field of battle. After the war, he attended Millersville Normal School (1865-1866) and the law school at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (1867-1868). He was admitted to the bar in 1868 and commenced practice in Lancaster County. He was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first and to the six succeeding Congresses serving from March 4, 1889 until his death in Lancaster on March 16, 1901.
CONTENTS: Notebooks contain the legal writings of Marriot Brosius when he was a law student at the University of Michigan from 1867 to 1868. Includes lecture notes taken from classes taught by Thomas MacIntyre Cooley and James Valentine Campbell.
