Getting Started

The following databases are frequently used to find articles and book chapters from the Education literature.  The content of Education Research Complete and ERIC is primarily K-higher education research and professional trade articles.  Academic Search Complete covers all disciplines (including Education) in less depth, but it also contains content from current popular media sources. 

  • Education Research Complete
    Education Research Complete covers scholarly research and information in all areas of education. Covers all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual, health, and testing. Covers curriculum instruction including administration, policy, funding, and related social issues. Provides indexing & abstracts for 1,500+ journals, as well as full text for 750+ journals. Includes 100+ books and education-related conference papers.
  • ERIC ( Education Resources Information Center )
    ERIC, the Education Resource Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources. The database provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index; journal articles, books, research syntheses, conference reports, technical reports, policy papers, and other education-related materials.
  • Academic Search Complete  
    Featuring thousands of articles from journals in all academic disciplines (including K-12 education) as well as popular media.

Background information on Education topics

The first two links here are databases that will help you to more fully understand a topic you are researching in terms of varying points of view in culture, politics, and the media.  Your topic may or may not be covered in these databases, so give them a try, but move on to other sources if necessary. 

The encyclopedias listed below will help to contextualize some very broad or very complicated issues in the field of Education research and practice. 

Educational Psychology and Testing

While both Education Research Complete and ERIC contain thousands of articles from the field of Educational Psychology, PsycInfo will cover the cognitive sciences more fully.  If you are researching a psychological test used in education, you will likely find reviews of the test in Mental Measurements Yearbook and you might be be able to find a copy of the test in PsycTESTS.

  • PsycINFO  
    The premier research tool for psychology and related disciplines (education, sociology, nursing, etc.). Provides access to journal articles, book chapters, dissertations, and technical reports.
  • Mental Measurements Yearbook ( includes Tests in Print )
    MMY is a guide to testing instruments used in psychology, education, business, and leadership. The online MMY provides the full-text of Volume 9 (1985) to the present. It does NOT include the actual tests. From the Buros Institute. 
  • PsycTESTS  
    Covers psychological tests and measures, including thousands of actual test instruments and test items that are available for immediate download and use in research and teaching. An authoritative source of structured information about tests of relevance to psychologists and professionals in related fields such as psychiatry, management, business, education, social science, neuroscience, law, medicine, and social work. While focused on contemporary instances of test use, coverage spans more than a century.

Databases with K-12 level resources

The content of the following databases is designed to be used by teachers or students in K-12 settings.  Articles and other resources are written for a K-12 audience.

  • Primary Search
    Primary Search contains full text for 80+ popular elementary school magazines. All full-text articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Primary Search includes the Encyclopedia of Animals; the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, which provides students with easy-to-read encyclopedic entries written specifically for kids; the American Heritage Children's Dictionary, 3rd Edition from Houghton Mifflin; and thousands of relevant photos, maps and flags.
  • MAS Ultra : School Edition
    Designed specifically for high school libraries, provides access to popular, general interest, and current events publications. Every full-text article is assigned a Lexile reading level indicator.

Children's Literature

  • Children's Literature Comprehensive Database  
    The Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) is an acquisition, research, and reference service that offers more 280,000 reviews of children's books--all full text searchable from 36 review sources.
  • Millersville University Library Catalog  
    Use the Basic Search option to look for a title or an author in our children's literature collection, or use the Guided Search and the LIMITS option, then select "Juvenile Collections" in order to search the children's literature collection by topic.
